Runaway Currents
Ena Grozdanić
'Runaway Currents' begins with a rumour of direct action to defend a river system. It takes this rumour, unverifiable, constantly mutating, and wonders what worlds it could birth? Whether truth or fiction or somewhere in between, the rumour forces us to ask: should we not all engage in small acts of sabotage? Does the disappearance of rivers not call for filibuster, for a sustained insurgency? Deploying personal history, collective memory, imagination and the archive, 'Runaway Currents' tells a polyvocal story of people on the frontlines, away from the centres of commerce and policy. It considers the myth-making potential of such a rumour and the role language plays in the production of social desires.
Ena Grozdanić is a critic, writer and emerging artist residing on unceded Kaurna land. Her practice spans creative writing, criticism, sound and video. Ena follows artist Irena Haiduk’s lead in refusing biography, alongside (colonial) borders and birth certificates. Ena is currently fascinated by the dynamics of memory, particularly in relation to lost worlds, shifting milleus, and disappearing landscapes. Through multidisciplinary storytelling, she hopes to capture the human and more-than-human stories embedded in landscapes.
