Dom Tang: This Is Where I Am

Our February 2022 Travelling Artist in Residence Dom Tang has developed a new work during her residency, shared here at Watch This Space as an installation in the Pantry.

In this project I have represented the Mparntwe landscape in a series of hyperreal animations using 3D photogrammetry and point cloud processing. Each scene references a real space within and nearby The Gap, where I have converted 400+ photographs into point clouds and then virtual environments. The areas I chose to document were accessible by bike or foot and had the best conditions for 3D capture. This meant places with minimal foot traffic, spray painted surfaces, non reflective or transparent textures and evenly sunlit environments. Informed by the limits of reality capture, I have photographed and digitised a selection of liminal and unoccupied sites as a response to my 3 week residency in Mpartnwe.
