WTS ZINE FAIR 2021

zine fair 2.jpg

The annual zine fair returns at Watch This Space in 2021, an alternative marketplace for swapping/selling/circulating zines in the gallery, celebrating local zines lately launched, and making new zines together.

A zine is an inherently political tool of self-expression, it represents a format fit for small-circulation and reproduction of ideas and images that challenge dominant narratives and domineering modes of publishing and distribution.

It can be a self-published story, comic, poster, single-page drawing, open letter, photo journal, flip book, brochure, postcard, sticker, manifesto or any little paper thing you can hold in your hand. The model for making is DIY and you don’t need any experience as a writer, artist or human being.

Join us for the Zine Fair opening on Friday night, 3 September to celebrate the fair, with live performances from Abiabi Richboii Thegreatone and Slumberkitty; launches of local zine ‘Second Dates Mparntwe’ and new book by Zoya Godoroja-Prieckaerts ‘It’s A Bit Tricky To Visit Each Other Right Now’; readings by Haneen Martin, Libraries Are For Everyone, and Second Dates; and tarot readings by Slumberkitty.

Then come down on Saturday, 4 September for the fair itself - the gallery transformed into a marketplace of zines from here, there, and far off places.

The Zine Fair is also generative: make your first, next, or ultimate zine alongside others at the zine making workshop at WTS on Tuesday 31 August. All welcome, some materials provided but pls also BYO, e.g. sketchbook, paper (for printing also, recycling encouraged), pencils, pens, computers etc.

If you want to use our photocopier, “Slick Ric”, and other facilities (long arm stapler, guillotine, etc) to compile your work, email us and we’ll see how we can help. Printing on Slick Ric is BYO paper. Did you know WTS members get heavily discounted print/copy rates?

Printing rates:

B&W A4: 5c per (single-sided) page

Colour A4: $1 per page for non-members

Already have a zine to put in the fair? Fill out this form, where you can apply for your own table to cover with as many zines as you like, or register to get them on the collective table (and get you paid for sales). You’ll then just need to drop them to WTS anytime/day during opening hours before 10am on the Fair day.
